Correlation between fertility and levels of protein, sugar and free amino acids in seminal plasma of Nelore bulls Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Assumpção,T.I.; Torres Júnior,R.A.A.; Sousa,M.V.; Ricart,C.A.O..
Correlations between fertility and the concentrations of proteins, reducing sugars and 17 types of free amino acids in the seminal plasma of Nelore bulls were estimated. The samples were collected from 19 bulls that had high quality semen, according to physical and morphological analyses. The bulls had their fertility scores estimated based on the pregnancy of the females mated to them during three consecutive breeding seasons, either by artificial insemination or by natural breeding. A large variability in the concentrations of the molecules was observed among the samples and a significant correlation coefficient (r= 0.90) between levels of proteins and reducing sugars was estimated. None of the components showed a significant correlation with fertility.

Correlation between sperm characteristics and testosterone in bovine seminal plasma by direct radioimmunoassay R. Bras. Zootec.
Souza,Luiz Waldemar de Oliveira; Andrade,André Furugen Cesar; Celeghini,Eneiva Carla Carvalho; Negrão,João Alberto; Arruda,Rubens Paes de.
The objectives of this study were to validate a non-extractive RIA for seminal testosterone and quantify the hormone using a solid-phase commercial kit, and study the correlation between testosterone in seminal plasma and sperm characteristics. Parallelism showed a correlation index r = 0.992 (Y = -5.47 + 1.073X; R² = 0.985), indicating that the non-extractive method presented is indicated particularly for assessment of testosterone when establishing comparisons between samples. Overall mean (±SD) of testosterone level was 0.60±0.65 ng/mL. Correlation was only found between the seminal concentrations of testosterone and pH of the semen.

Imunofluorescência direta: um teste sensível e especifico para o diagnóstico da Campilobacteriose genital em touros. Infoteca-e
PELLEGRIN, A. O.; FIGUEIREDO, J. F.; LEITE, R. C.; LAGE, A. P..

Morphological, Stereological and Histometrical Assessment of the Testicular Parameters between Holstein and Simmental Bulls International Journal of Morphology
Akosman,Murat Sirri; Lenger,Ömer Faruk; Demirel,Hasan Hüseyin.
The testicular measurement is important criteria for experimental researches especially in toxicological studies and the prediction of spermatogenesis. In light of this knowledge, we aimed to estimate and compare these parameters in two different kinds of cattle breeds. The gross anatomical measurements were performed by vernier caliper, volume of the testis was estimated by Cavalieri method and seminiferous tubule diameter was measured on the histological sections by software-loaded computer attached to microscope. The mean testis weight, length, width, volume, and tubule diameter of the Simmental bulls and the Holstein bulls measured as 316 g, 12.1 cm, 6.9 cm, 295 cm3 and 226.68 µm and 299 g, 12.1 cm, 6.8 cm, 285 cm3 and 223.44 µm, respectively. In...

New alternatives for improving and assessing the color of dark–cutting beef – a review Scientia Agricola
Ribeiro,Caio César de Sousa; Contreras-Castillo,Carmen Josefina; Santos-Donado,Priscila Robertina dos; Venturini,Anna Cecilia.
ABSTRACT Myoglobin (Mb) is a sarcoplasmic heme protein present in muscle cells, which acts as a short–term oxygen (O2) reserve in the muscle tissue. After slaughtering and exsanguination, Mb is the major pigment that provides the red color in meat. The concentration of Mb together with its redox state are two pivotal factors that determine meat color. The elevated pH of dark–cutting beef can affect both physical and biochemical properties resulting in decreased oxygenation. The darkening observed in high ultimate pH (pHu) beef concerns meat processors as color is the initial attribute that impacts on the purchase. Thus, any atypical meat color (i.e., loss of brightness) reduces consumer interest in the product. Several studies have demonstrated that...

Possible Associations between Bovine Growth Hormone Gene Polymorphism and Reproductive Traits BABT
Unanian,Maria Marina; Barreto,Cristine Chaves; Cordeiro,Célia Maria Torres; Freitas,Alfredo Ribeiro; Josahkian,Luiz Antonio.
The polymorphism of the bovine growth hormone gene (bGH) was studied in 211 Nellore pure breed males for association with reproductive traits. Scrotal circumference and testosterone concentrations were collected monthly from 10 until 16 months of age. Additionally, testicular growth rates were calculated. DNA was amplified by PCR and digested using Msp I and Hae III restriction enzymes. Every polymorphism presented two alleles. The predominant alleles were D (0.85) and F (0.98), respectively, and genotype EE - bGH/Hae III was missing. Significant association (P<0.05) between bGH/Msp I polymorphism, scrotal circumference and testicular growth after puberty, as well as between bGH/Hae III and testosterone concentrations at puberty were detected. The...

The effect of feed intake containing whole cottonseed on blood parameters of Nellore bulls Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Gomes,V.S.; Mano,S.B.; Freitas,M.Q.; Santos,M.D.; Azeredo,V.B.; Silva,J.M.; Santos,E.B.; Conte-Júnior,C.A..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of diets containing whole cottonseed (WC) on blood biochemical parameters of bulls. Thirty bulls with 30±6 months and 382.7±28.4kg were kept in feedlot (85 days) and fed the following WC levels: 0, 2.22, 4.44, 6.66, 8.88 and 11.11%. In comparing biochemical indicators from the beginning to the end of the experiment, the control group (CG) and those fed diets containing 2.22, 8.88 and 11.11% of WC had an increase (P<0.05) in serum Ca concentrations (8.34±0.65−9.56±0.92mEqL-1). In relation to Fe (202.79±69.04−300.04±79.88µg/dL), the CG and those treated with 6.66% WC showed an increase (P<0.05) in serum concentrations. As to the Mg (1.92±0.18−2.40±0.27mEqL-1), groups treated with diet containing...

Bertol,Melina Andrea Formighieri; Weiss,Romildo Romualdo; Thomaz-Soccol,Vanete; Kozicki,Luiz Ernandes; Fujita,Aline Silva; Abreu,Renata Azevedo de; Green,Kerriel Thandile.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the viability of bull spermatozoa collected from the cauda epididymis stored at 18-20°C, which were compared with semen collected by electro-ejaculation method and preserved at 5°C. Ten pairs of testes from Tabapuã bulls were removed by orchiectomy and stored for 6 (G6), 12 (G12), 18 (G18), 24 (G24) and 30 (G30) h at room temperature (18-20°C). Seven days before orchiectomy, semen was collected by electro-ejaculation method. The sperm parameters evaluated were: sperm motility, vigor, concentration, morphology and acrosome defects. Sperm motility declined (p<0.05) when spermatozoa were stored for 30 h in the epididymis. The spermatozoa from the epididymis showed lower sperm motility than that of spermatozoa collected...
